In the simplest terms, a rider is an addition to the performance contract that outlines what the artist needs to give their best performance.
It is usually split into two main sections:
1. The Technical Rider: This covers the “stuff” on stage—sound systems, lighting rigs, stage dimensions, and power requirements.
2. The Hospitality Rider: This covers the “comforts”—dressing room snacks, beverages, towels, and transportation.
You’ve probably heard the legend of Van Halen and their demand for a bowl of M&Ms in the dressing room with all the brown ones removed. For years, people used this as the ultimate example of “diva” behaviour.
But there was a brilliant reason for it. Van Halen’s show was incredibly complex and dangerous. Their technical rider was massive, involving heavy equipment and specific power loads. They tucked the M&M clause deep in the hospitality section as a “canary in the coal mine.” If they walked into the dressing room and saw brown M&Ms, they knew the organizer hadn’t read the rider thoroughly. It was a red flag that the safety-critical technical requirements might have been ignored, too.
The technical rider is where Pynx Pro AV really shines. This section will list things like:
• Audio Requirements: Specific mixing consoles like the Allen & Heath dLive C3500 or high-end speakers like the Adamson CS10 Line Array.
• Lighting Design: Requests for “intelligent” moving lights, such as ADJ Vizi Beam 12RXs, and atmospheric effects like hazers or fog machines.
• Staging: Requirements for a specific stage size or a mobile solution like the Stageline SL260.
• Backline: This refers to the professional-grade instruments and amplifiers touring bands may request that makes a stage feel like home for the band—such as guitar amplifiers, bass rigs, drums, or support gear such as keyboard stands.
• Video: An artist’s technical rider often specifies a modular LED video wall with exact proportions and requires high-resolution real-time graphics that must be delivered in the correct format and resolution so everything looks crisp.
Most organizers aren’t audio engineers. When an artist asks for “8 channels of Shure PSM 1000 IEM systems,” you shouldn’t have to Google what that means.
Our team at Pynx Pro AV specializes in rider compliance. We review the technical documents for you, identify what we have in our extensive inventory, and handle the communication with the band’s road crew. We take the “tech-speak” and turn it into a successful show.
While the tech rider keeps the show running, the hospitality rider keeps the performers happy. Common requests include:
• Catering: Meals for the band and crew (often including vegetarian or allergy-specific options).
• Dressing Room Essentials: Mirrors, comfortable seating, and—yes—towels (always more than you think!).
• Beverages: Specific brands of water, coffee, or post-show drinks.
1. Start the “Discovery” Process Early
In our Pynx Process, the first step is always Discovery. As soon as you book an act, ask for their current rider. Note that riders change! A band might send you their 2023 rider when they actually have new requirements for 2026. Always confirm you have the latest version.
2. Budget for the “Hidden” Costs
Riders can be expensive. If you only budget for the “performance fee,” you might be surprised by the cost of renting a specific piano or providing 50 pounds of ice. Review the rider before you finalize your event budget.
3. Lean on Your Production Team
You don’t have to do this alone. At Pynx Pro AV, we pride ourselves on being more than just a vendor; we are your production partner. We’ve worked with artists like Jade Eagleson, Jann Arden, and Dwayne Gretzky, ensuring every one of their specific needs was met perfectly.
Navigating riders is a key part of our Full-Service Event Production. We provide:
• Technical Consultation: We translate the rider and tell you exactly what is needed for the venue.
• Turnkey Solutions: We provide the stage, sound, lights, and backline all under one roof.
• On-Site Management: Our experienced technicians stay on-site to handle any last-minute “surprises”.
Don’t let a 20-page rider stop you from booking the act of your dreams. Let the experts at Pynx Pro AV handle the heavy lifting. We’ve supported thousands of events across Ontario, and we’re ready to make yours the next success story.
Let’s create an event your team will talk about all year long.
